I am a little confused by the letter to the editor from Susan Rowe that was printed Oct. 5. She wrote the state of Maine’s governmental services, schools, roads, police and fire departments, even the elderly and young children, will suffer if the Taxpayer Bill of Rights is passed.
That is a common scare tactic. There will be no cuts. How will a 3 percent increase annually cause suffering?
If there are special circumstances, and there is a need to raise a tax or fee, any governing body can put it before a vote and the citizens of Maine can decide whether or not to generate an increase.
Imagine that. The citizens of Maine deciding. How is that one-size-fits-all?
Election day is Nov. 7, and I am voting yes on Question One: the Taxpayer Bill of Rights.
