LEWISTON – A couple from Georgia suffered injuries Saturday night when their SUV crashed into a moose on the Maine Turnpike, police said.

William Gauthier, 65, and Maryanne Gauthier of Carrollton, Ga., were driving northbound on Mile 84 between Lewiston and Sabattus around 9:30 p.m. when the accident happened.

The collision “peeled the roof back, smashed the windshield” and totaled the Jeep Cherokee, said Maine State Police Trooper Duane Doughty. The adult moose was killed in the crash.

William Gauthier, who was driving, suffered cuts on his hands. His wife suffered cuts on her face and glass in her eyes, Doughty said. Both were taken to Central Maine Medical Center.
