LIVERMORE FALLS – Two Massachusetts men are accused of trafficking in crack cocaine and furnishing marijuana after police stopped a vehicle they were in for speeding and having a taillight out, officer Steve Gould said Sunday.
Driver Luis Paleaz, 54, of Milford, Mass., and passenger Mark Merchant, 38, of Hopedale, Mass., were both charged with felony aggravated trafficking in crack cocaine and misdemeanor furnishing marijuana, Gould said.
He had stopped the vehicle for the traffic violation and vehicle defect about 11 p.m. Friday, he said.
Gould became suspicious after talking to them because their stories continued to conflict during conversations, he said.
Police received consent to search the vehicle, Gould said.
Gould, assisted by officer Joe Sage, searched the vehicle and found 46 grams of crack cocaine and about one-half pound of marijuana.
The drugs were headed to the Farmington/Wilton area, Gould said.
The men were being held on $2,500 cash bail each Sunday night at the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn.
