Wheeler named runner of the week

GORHAM – Nick Wheeler of the University of Southern Maine Huskies men’s cross country team has been named the Little East Conference runner of the week.

Wheeler joins his twin brother, Curtis Wheeler, as the second USM harrier to earn the accolade during the 2006 season.

Wheeler was the first Southern Maine runner to cross the finish line at the New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association Cross Country Championships at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass., covering the 8-kilometer course in a time of 25:44. Wheeler’s time earned him a 58th-place finish out of 307 competitors and marked nearly a minute and a half improvement over his time last season.

Hall of Fame event tickets on sale

ORONO – Tickets are on sale for the 2006 University of Maine Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony slated for Sunday, Oct. 22 during homecoming weekend at the Buchanan Alumni House.

Former ice hockey player Mike McHugh and men’s basketball standout Jeff Cross highlight a list of six inductees.

The event begins with a social hour at 11 a.m., followed by dinner at noon, and the induction program. Contact the ticket office at Alfond Arena 1-800-757-TEAM or 581-BEAR for ticket information. All tickets must be purchased in advance of the event.
