PORTLAND – Bruce E. Hilton, 61, of Loring Lane, Pownal, died Saturday, Oct. 7, at Maine Medical Center.
He was born in Portland, Feb. 16, 1945, the son of Frank and Strella Billings Hilton. He attended Brunswick schools and was a 1964 graduate of Boothbay Region High School.
From 1965 to 1969, he served as a machinist’s mate in the Navy, serving on the USS O’Hare off the coast of Vietnam. He then went to the University of Southern Maine, earning his bachelor’s degree in education.
On April 18, 1970, he married Judi Libby. He taught at Westbrook Regional Vocational School in the metal trades for 19 years. He then taught photography and automotive trade at Edward Little School in Auburn for five years.
He loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing and woodworking. He built his own custom shop at home. He also especially loved traveling on cruises.
He was a member of the Maine Educational Association and the National Education Association. He was a co-adviser for the Maine Vocational Association and was a member of the Maine Metal Products Scholarship Program. He was also a member of the Amvets of Yarmouth and the Disabled American Veterans.
Surviving besides his wife of Pownal is a son, Christopher Bruce Hilton, his wife, Carrie Ann and their daughter, Morgan Lynn Hilton of New Gloucester; his stepmother, Margaret Hilton of Brunswick; a brother, Frank Hilton of Harpswell; an uncle, Fred Hilton of York Beach; also several nieces, nephews and cousins.
