OTISFIELD – Sam’s Landing will be getting some work done after the town received a permit from the Maine Department of Environmental Protection, Planning Board Director Rick Micklon said Tuesday.

The town has completed the design and plans for the 100-foot-by-100-foot lot on the banks of Saturday Pond, and will begin work soon.

The lot allows motorists to practically drive up to the shore to load and unload boats. This section has eroded, Micklon said.

Under the plans, barriers will be placed to allow vehicles to only go so far, so people will have to “hand-carry” their canoes and kayaks to the pond, Micklon said.

Bark mulch and soils will be placed on the surface to prevent erosion.

Micklon said large rocks that had fallen into the water will be pulled out and used to stabilize the shore line.

In addition, picnic tables will be added and the parking area will be expanded.

Micklon said he hopes the work will be done this fall, so the landing will be ready for use in the spring.

The landing is named after its benefactor, Sam Jaakkola, who donated it in 1946.

In June, developers Dale Verrill of Paris and Tom Kennison of Oxford submitted applications and started development on the land, but town officials quickly halted it, stating that developers would first have to go before the planning board.
