GORHAM – Becky Macdonald scored the game’s lone goal early in the second half to send Bates to a 1-0 victory over the University of Southern Maine in women’s soccer Wednesday.
Macdonald’s 12-yard game-winner was set up by Julie Brown. Bates (8-3) outshot USM by a 25-2 margin. Mia Lidofsky made one save.
Men’s soccer
USM 2, UNE 0
BIDDEFORD – Sinisa Bajic used the assistance of Eddie Weddington to score a pair of goals to give the University of Southern Maine a 2-0 victory over the University of New England in men’s soccer action Wednesday.
Bajic netted his first goal for the Huskies (6-8) in the 21st minute when he collected a cross from Weddington and deposited a low shot into the back of the net. USM added an insurance goal in the 58th minute when Weddington set up Bajic, who knocked home his team-leading eighth goal of the season.
Albany 2, Maine 1
ORONO – Brian Gordon converted a pass from Don Johnson with 2:28 remaining in the game to lift Albany to a 2-1 victory over the University of Maine in men’s soccer action.
The Great Danes (6-6-2) got on the board first with a goal from Kurt Ruhe Lischke in the 25th minute.
Cooper Friend tied things at 1-1 for the Black Bears (0-14-0) on a penalty kick called when Maine was fouled while attempting to scored from inside the box. There were seven yellow cards given out in the game.
Field hockey
Bowdoin 2, Bates 1
BRUNSWICK – Bowdoin rallied to win its 16th consecutive home game with a 2-1 triumph over Bates in field hockey on Wednesday.
Bates (4-4) took the early lead on a goal by Lindsey Ferguson 10 minutes into the game, but the Polar Bears (8-1), ranked eighth in the nation, tied it 10 minutes later on Lindsay McNamara’s penalty stroke. Hillary Hoffman scored the game-winner.
UMF 1, UNE 0
BIDDEFORD – Alyssa St. Pierre scored with 17:29 remaining to give the University of Maine at Farmington a 1-0 non-conference victory over the University of New England in field hockey action.
St. Pierre notched the only goal of the evening when she picked up a loose ball and poked it into the back of the cage from short range. The Nor’easters (5-5) had a chance to tie the match less than five minutes later but failed to convert a penalty stroke.
Colby 7, USM 0
WATERVILLE – Mary Clare Snediker scored two goals in the first eight minutes of the game as Colby took a 7-0 non-conference win over the University of Southern Maine.
Snedikker scored just 3:01 into the game, then added another goal with 27:43 left before halftime. Madison Gregor scored two goals of her own with 11:16 and 8:11 remaining until halftime for a 4-0 lead at the break.
Jenn Reilly scored about five minutes into the second half for a 5-0 lead.
and then Kyla Wagman became the third player with two goals after tallying with 16:37 and 11:00 remaining in the game. Jamie Enos and Molly rice each played one half for the shared shutout. Allie Hill made 15 saves in net for the Huskies.
