AUBURN – Erin O’Leary wrote a book last year hoping she would win the Auburn Book Project contest.
The sixth-grader at Fairview Elementary School, the daughter of Julie and Kevin O’Leary, did win.
She wrote and illustrated her children’s book, “Food to the Rescue.”
At 11 a.m. today, the Auburn Public Library will receive two copies of “Food to the Rescue” for circulation. After that, Erin will be treated to an author’s lunch. From 12:30 to 3 p.m. she’ll sign her books at Waldenbooks at the Auburn Mall, said teacher Joanie Simard.
Erin’s winning work is about a superhero chef who saves people with her culinary creations. Miss Chefly’s sponge cake helps mop up a flood. Miss Chefly uses honey and graham crackers to save the Golden Gate Bridge from falling apart.
Erin was inspired by the tall tales her class was working on. “And I have family members who are in the cooking business,” she said. One relative owns an ice cream store in Canada; another works for a catering company. “When I was little, I wanted to be a chef.”
She’s changed her career plans: “I want to be a writer.”
The book contest is an annual one open to all Auburn fifth- and sixth-graders, Simard said. The contest starts again in January.
Erin has advice for next year’s contestants: Start early.
“My biggest problem was time,” she said. “The drawings take a lot of time.”
