While former President Bill Clinton will appear at a fundraiser for Democratic Gov. John Baldacci today in Portland, Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney will be campaigning with Republican Chandler Woodcock on Wednesday.

Clinton will be at the Hannaford Lecture Hall in the Abromson Community Education Center at the University of Southern Maine. Tickets range in price from $100 to $500.

Woodcock, who is running a publicly financed campaign, cannot hold fundraising events for his campaign. But Romney, who is considered a possible Republican presidential candidate for 2008, will tour D&G Machine in Westbrook with Woodcock and then participate in a news conference.

On its most recent campaign finance report, the Maine Republican Party reported receiving $5,000 from Romney’s political action committee.

Back to Connecticut

In August, Maine U.S. Sen. Susan Collins announced that she would fully support U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman in his bid for re-election.

Lieberman lost in the Connecticut Democratic Party primary to Ned Lamont, but is running as an independent to hold onto his seat.

Lieberman is the ranking member on the Senate’s Homeland Security Committee, which Collins chairs.

Collins said Thursday that she will return to Connecticut this week to campaign for Lieberman.

Taking sides

The boards of selectmen in Litchfield, Sebago and Wales have entered the Taxpayer Bill of Rights fight. All three have passed resolutions supporting TABOR.

Litchfield joined in on Oct. 9 with a unanimous resolution: “As presented, the TABOR referendum is not a perfect solution. Political solutions seldom are. However, it is the feeling of the Litchfield Board of Selectmen that this is the best chance to put our state government back on track,” the resolution states, in part. “We do not feel, as others do, that TABOR will dramatically affect Litchfield’s ability to have effective local government.”

Snowe days

U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe, who’s running for re-election, has set up a busy schedule for today. She’ll be at the town office in Bethel at 12:20 p.m., at Chalmers Insurance in Bridgton at 2:25 p.m. and at Western Auto in Norway at 4:10 p.m.

She will take a walking tour of each town.

Snowe is being challenged by Democrat Jean Hay Bright and independent Bill Slavick for her Senate seat.

Debates on MPBN

The Maine Public Broadcasting Network has a full schedule of debates before November’s election.

U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud, who represents Maine’s 2nd Congressional District, will debate challenger Scott D’Amboise at 8 p.m. on Oct. 18. Snowe will face Bright and Bill Slavick at 8 p.m. on Oct. 25. And the five candidates for governor will debate at 8 p.m. on Nov. 1.

U.S. Rep. Tom Allen, state Rep. Darlene Curley and Dexter Kamilewicz debated Oct. 11.

Don’t worry if you miss one. MPBN will post the debates on its Web site, www.mpbn.net, where both video and audio will be available.

Four for the road

The four major candidates for governor appeared together – again – last week, this time at a forum sponsored by the Androscoggin County Chamber of Commerce. The talking got started at 8 a.m. Eleven hours later, there was another forum, this one hosted by Maine Audubon, the Maine Conservation Voters Education Fund, The Nature Conservancy, the Natural Resources Council of Maine and the Northern Forest Alliance as well as more than 30 additional organizational sponsors in Portland.

The quartet appears together so often, they can almost finish each others barely veiled jabs. Maybe if they wanted to save campaign cash and cut down on energy usage, they could carpool.
