JAY – A group of residents who oppose the Taxpayer Bill of Rights is holding a meeting Tuesday to discuss its disadvantages.

“Of course everybody has a different opinion, and as far as I’m concerned, it would be a very bad thing for the town of Jay,” meeting organizer Hyla Freidman said Friday. “At my age, I’ve seen a lot of these things come along. They make them sound so convincing,” she said.

The meeting, which is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Oct. 17 in the Jay Middle School cafeteria, will be a discussion and lecture by speaker Deb Hutton.

“She’s going to come out and speak to the people about why we shouldn’t vote for it,” Friedman said. “We’re trying to work together to do something.”

Older folks, especially, need to hear the opposing side of the issue, Friedman said. “(TABOR proponents) are scaring the bejesus out of them – trying to get the scare factor into the older people.”

As a town, Jay would be paralyzed under TABOR, Friedman said, because spending under it is linked in part to population growth. “Right now in Jay someone dies one day, a baby’s born the next. It stays about the same,” she said.
