WEST PARIS – Selectmen awarded a contract for screening and delivery of winter sand to Calvin Mason of West Paris for $5.75 per cubic yard.
Town Manager and Road Commissioner Donald Woodbury said the contract, which was awarded Thursday, is for 2,000 cubic yards for $11,500.
“This is less sand than we usually order each year, but thanks to a good winter last year we had much more sand left over than in the past,” he said.
Other bidders were Shane Poland of West Paris for $6.85 per cubic yard; Everett Excavation of Norway for $6.90; and Tibbetts Construction of Wilton for $7.
Selectman Wade Rainey said, “Going with the low bid we can save around $2,000, which is a good saving for the townspeople. I would like to check with Calvin, though, to see if he feels he has enough trucks to do the job for that price. If he has to hire trucks I don’t believe he can.”
The vote to award the contract to Mason was unanimous.
Selectmen also voted unanimously to contract with Morton Salt through Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments for road salt.
The contract will be for 350 tons at $51.57 for a total of $18,049.50.
Woodbury pointed out that the cost per ton is up slightly from last year, but the town also had a considerable amount left over.
“I hope we have another easy winter this year,” he said, “as easy winters save us a considerable amount in taxpayers’ money.”
Woodbury told the board he needs three new members on the town’s budget committee and appeals board and hopes people will volunteer.
“Anyone interested can call the town office or contact one of the selectmen if interested,” Woodbury concluded.
