LISBON FALLS – Master Beekeeper Rick Cooper will give an overview of beekeeping from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 25, at the University of Maine Cooperative Extension offices for Androscoggin and Sagadahoc counties, 24 Main St.

The presentation is designed for those who are considering beekeeping. Topics include the life cycle of the honey bee, hive management over the year, equipment, tools and supplies, as well as resources for the beginning beekeeper.

Honey bees account for 80 percent of all pollination done by insects and make a dramatic contribution to gardens with increased harvest and larger fruits, flowers and vegetables for the home gardener.

In addition to honey, bees produce beeswax, propolis, royal jelly and gather and store pollen. Other aspects of honey bees, such as their complex communication system, division of labor in the hive and the queen’s role in sustaining the colony continue to fascinate beekeepers.

The class will also provide time for questions by participants. Registration is $10 and can be done through Lisbon Adult Education, 353-3037. Deadline for registration is Friday, Oct. 20.
