AUBURN – James Newcomb Plummer Jr., 85, of Mechanic Falls, died Sunday, Oct. 15, at Clover Manor, surrounded by his loving family and caregivers.

He was born in Raymond on Sept. 18, 1921, the son of James and Lena Plummer.

He was married to Dorothy M. Reynolds on Oct. 7, 1939. Jim and Dot spent 66 wonderful years together.

He graduated from Mechanic Falls High School and served his country in the US Army in World War II.

He owned and operated A.W. Strout with his son, Ricky, until his retirement. He was a member of the American Legion Post 150 for 27 years, secretary of Triangle Fish and Game, and a member of the Maine Oil Dealers Assoc., and the Mechanic Falls Planning Board. He and his wife were also in the PTA and chaperoned many school functions, as well as sponsoring many area baseball and basketball teams.

He was known for his wonderful storytelling and no one went cold in the tri-town area even if they could not pay upon delivery. He also enjoyed patching bicycle tires at no cost.

All he wanted to see was a happy child. He was happiest surrounded by his large loving family and was known as the neighborhood “Dad.”

He enjoyed fishing with his wife, family, and friends at Moosehead and Bryant Pond. Many a cold stormy night you would hear the plow drop as he cleared countless driveways.

He is survived by his ten children, Jimmy (Ruth) Plummer, Sandra (Stacy) Ballard, Kickie (Linda Fish) Plummer, Sheila (Chub) Harris, Penny (Bud) Emery, Billy (Judy) Plummer, Ricky (Lori) Plummer, Rudy Plummer, Randy (Karen) Plummer, and Claudia (Dan) Mercier; 63 grandchildren; 65 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, his wife, several brothers, a sister, and a granddaughter, Theresa Emery.

The Plummer family wants to say “Thank You” to the Loving Staff at the Clover Alzheimer’s Unit Side 3, for taking such good care of our Dad.
