AUBURN – Jose W. “Joe” Diaz, 67, of Jay, died Tuesday, Oct. 17, at the Hospice House in Auburn.
He was born Aug. 17, 1939, in Livermore, a son of Jose M. and Mary (Juskewitch) Diaz.
He attended Livermore Falls schools.
On Oct. 31, 1958, he married Janet Allen in Jay, where they made their home.
He started his construction business, Diaz Corp. in 1962 and owned and operated it until ill health caused his retirement in 2003.
He was very involved in the community through various service and fraternal organizations including the Masons, Shrine, Elks, and Sons of AMVETS. He was also a longtime member of the Associated General Contractors of Maine and the Maine Better Transportation Association.
He attended the Nazarene and Baptist churches in Livermore Falls and was happy to give back to them. He enjoyed time spent at his camp in Eustis and with his family, especially his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Janet of Jay; two daughters, Terri Shaw and her husband, John, of East Wilton, and Crystal St. Onge and her husband, Phil, of Winslow; two sons, Jonathan Diaz and his wife, Amy, of Jay, and Jody Diaz of Jay; a daughter-in-law, Judy Diaz of Jay; two brothers, Vincent Diaz and his wife, Pam, of East Livermore, and John Diaz and his wife of Lewiston; five sisters, Joanne Girardin of Biddeford, Mary Stewart of Sarasota, Fla., Juanita DeGrandi and her husband, Mario, of Kensington, Conn., Frances Simpson and her husband, Russell of Vero Beach, Fla., and Rose Marie Shute of Ariz.; grandchildren, Corey and Jason Shaw, Alyssa and Delaney Wood, Giovanni St. Onge, Ginger Paquette, Jose and Elizabeth Diaz, and Colby and Emma Diaz.
He was predeceased by his parents and a son, Allen Diaz, in 2000.
