• Auburn’s population will probably increase to about 30,000 persons in 20 years, it is predicted in the report prepared for the Auburn Planning Committee by John T. Blackwell. On the basis of recent nationwide experience, the present population of 23,135 will probably be more than 40,000 in 50 years.

• WATERVILLE – The 1956 Cancer Crusade raised $165,396, a new state record, the Maine Cancer Society’s Board of directors announced today.

AUGUSTA – The Rev. Herman “Buddy” Frankland and others filed suit in U.S. District Court in Bangor on Friday to block the state from enforcing teacher and curriculum requirements at Maine’s fundamental Christian schools.

“We do not believe that state regulation guarantees good education,” Frankland said in a prepared statement dictated by telephone to The Associated Press. “We do not believe that education which ignores traditional Bible-centered values is good education.”
