That more than three people at North Auburn are opposed to the moving of the Old Engine House, the building which has stood in the centre of the little village for the past 20 years and which has been the sole place for miles around where dances, church suppers and entertainments by the children could be given, was evident yesterday for a remonstrance signed by 204 people was presented to the special committee of the Auburn city government which was appointed at the last meeting to look into the matter of giving the building to the Veteran Firemen’s Association.

50 Years Ago, 1956

CUMBERLAND CENTER – Ever wonder where those little wooden plugs on a lobster’s claw come from? Well, here’s the answer, Leroy Grover, a retired 64-year-old Maine coast skipper makes them on a machine he designed himself. “I could turn out four or five thousand plugs if I worked all day and half the evening, but I only work when I feel like it,” he explained. The theory behind the lobster plugs, he explained, is to get more two claw lobsters to market and to help lobstermen keep the fingers they were born with. The plugs are jammed in the lobster’s claw so that he cannot open it to grab and remove either his fellow crustacean’s claws or an unwary dealer’s fingers.

25 Years Ago, 1981

Scientists have achieved another landmark in producing a substitute for blood which successfully has been tested on baboons and now is being tested on human patients. It can produce a virtual revolution in surgery and disease treatments which involve blood transfusions, while minimizing the need for blood donors under many conditions.
