MEXICO – Police officers, emergency responders and Oxford County dispatchers were busy late Wednesday night handling three separate accidents: one in Mexico, one in Peru and one in Canton. The latter two happened at about the same time while responders were already dealing with the first.

Two of four people injured in the Mexico head-on collision on Route 2 were taken by Med-Care Ambulance to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. A CMMC nursing supervisor said Thursday night that Cassandra Harney was in stable condition and “doing fine,” but Kalyn Kersey, Harney’s passenger, was not at the hospital.

Harney, 19, of Oxford, was driving a 1993 Ford Escort station wagon east on Route 2 toward Dixfield without headlights on, when, at 9:15 p.m., a 2000 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck driven west by Daniel H. Pelletier of Dixfield, attempted to turn left into the Big Apple convenience store and Shell gas station, according to Mexico Officer Dustin Broughton’s accident report.

Broughton said at the scene that Pelletier never saw the station wagon, striking it on the driver’s side corner, crushing the front end and trapping Harney in her seat. Mexico police Chief Jim Theriault said Harney suffered leg injuries.

Mexico and Rumford firefighters responded, along with two Med-Care ambulances and Dixfield and Rumford police at Houghton’s request.

The totaled pickup and station wagon blocked both lanes of Route 2, forcing Mexico firefighters to shut down the road for about an hour. Foam was spread under the two cars as a precaution while Rumford firefighters using hydraulic equipment worked to extricate Harney.

Her two passengers, Kersey, 19, of Harrison, whom Theriault said complained of pain, and Winfield Scott, 33, no town given, who was bleeding from the face, were taken to Rumford Hospital. Scott was treated and released, a Rumford nursing supervisor said Thursday evening.

The station wagon’s roof was cut free and lifted off at 9:40 p.m., allowing rescuers to climb into the Ford and free Harney. Harney was taken to Rumford Hospital then transferred to the Lewiston hospital, a Rumford nursing supervisor said.

Pelletier, who wasn’t wearing a seatbelt, had a bump on his forehead. His passenger, Samantha Averill, 21, no town given, was not injured, Houghton’s report stated.

The accident remained under investigation Thursday night.

In the Peru accident, which happened at about 10:15 p.m. Wednesday at the Worthley Pond and Greenwood road intersection with Route 108, driver Diane Sanchas, 46, of Peru, was not injured, Oxford County Deputy Justin Brown said at the scene.

Sanchas, he said, was driving a 2001 Ford Ranger pickup when she ran a stop sign, crossed both lanes of Route 108 without braking, and entered the edge of woods, Brown said. The truck glanced off trees and nosed into a brook ditch, causing an estimated $3,000 in damage.

Peru firefighters limited traffic to one lane until a tow truck operator could haul the truck back to the road.

Brown later arrested Sanchas, charging her with operating under the influence, and, at 1:15 a.m. Thursday, booked her into the Oxford County Jail in Paris. She was then released on personal recognizance bail.

Oxford County sheriffs did not return phone calls about the Canton accident by late Thursday night.
