The Sun Journal’s analysis of the Mark Muro report correctly pointed out that supporters of the Taxpayer Bill of Rights would like Muro’s finding that state government is inefficient. However, the newspaper failed to point out that the same report found that local governments are efficient.

So if we support TABOR, we not only put restrictions on state spending, we also place the same controls on local spending. Since local town government was already found to be efficient, where will the cuts come from in our local communities?

Most towns pay for their local officials – selectmen, town clerk, treasurer, assessors, planning board, etc. – fire protection, police and schools. If town officials cannot produce budgets within the restrictions of TABOR, TABOR says “the majority rule” procedure in town meetings no longer applies. In that situation, if a small number of voters in the community objected to an existing or new program or service, the program or service would be cut, even if it was supported by a majority of voters.

Since local officials have very limited areas to cut, would TABOR supporters please tell me where those local cuts could be made?
