GRAFTON TOWNSHIP – Maine Warden Service officers and rescue teams were looking for two lost hikers in the Old Speck mountain area late Thursday night, a state police dispatcher in Gray said.
At 9:30 p.m., it wasn’t known where the hikers were or whether they are injured. One made a 911 call with a cell phone, which was low on battery power, at about 5:30 p.m., alerting authorities. Calls to assemble searchers began soon after as wardens headed for the area northwest of Newry.
The hikers had apparently been lost since 4 p.m.
A command post was set up at the Appalachian Trail parking lot in Grafton Notch State Park off Route 26.
