LEWISTON – Police arrested a city woman Friday afternoon as she was waiting to board a bus for Florida. The irony, police said, is that there was already a court order in place to send the woman to the Sunshine State.
Lena Rivers White, 31, of 109 Birch St., was arrested at the bus station at 1 p.m. Friday just hours after she was released from the Androscoggin County Jail.
Police said White had been released from jail earlier Friday morning after a paperwork mixup at the Auburn lockup. An extradition order was in place to return White to Florida on a warrant charging her with aggravated drug trafficking.
After jail officials realized that White had been released mistakenly, they notified area police departments to be on the lookout for her.
“The officers went knocking on doors looking for her,” said Lewiston police Sgt. Michael Whalen. “They were told she was heading to Florida.”
Police officers went to the bus station on Bates Street where they found White. She was arrested without incident.
In Lewiston, police are familiar with White. According to court records, she has been arrested numerous times on traffic charges. In June, she was charged with aggravated drug trafficking.
It was not clear Friday night why White was released from jail while she was ordered held for extradition to Florida. Jail administrators could not be reached for comment.
