There is something wrong with our taxes when the Lewiston and Auburn cities have done nothing to consolidate and share services. The only thing they have done to implement the joint services report is to wait for state grants to help implement. They received an “F” grade from the Sun Journal.
There is something wrong with our taxes when the town of Poland increased education expenses by 53 percent, and town expenses by 46 percent in only seven years. Property taxes just went up another 8.7 percent.
There is something wrong with our taxes when the Maine Department of Health and Human Services initially agreed to pay $14.3 million for a new computer system and it didn’t work. It is now expected to cost more than $56 million by next year. This is a great example of our taxes at work.
The Taxpayer Bill of Rights will allow reasonable funding increases every year. There are no tax cuts. If any level of state or local spending needs to exceed the spending caps, it can be done by asking the voters at the voting booth. That’s the beauty of this: ask the person who has to pay the bills.
All of the above is why I support TABOR.
