LEWISTON – Dial a Greek Pastry will be taking orders for traditional Greek pastries for the holidays. To place an order, call 946-7372, 784-7107 or 784-0795. Orders will be taken until Nov. 14.
The Greek Orthodox Church pastry chefs will offer the following sweets:
Baklava: Buttered filo dough (paper thin leaves of specially made dough) layered with a filling of spices and chopped walnuts baked until it is crisp and golden. While warm, the pastry is smothered with a honey syrup and cut into triangles. $1.50 each.
Finikia: Honeyed cake-type cookies baked until they are brown, moist and fragrant with spices. They are dipped in honey syrup and sprinkled with crushed nuts. $1 each.
Kourambiedes: Cookies made with butter and baked until golden brown, then blanketed with powdered sugar; similar to shortbread. $1 each.
Kataifi: Made with shredded filo dough, filled with spices and chopped walnuts. A honey syrup is poured on top. $1.50 each.
Tiropitas: Crispy cheese triangles made with imported feta cheese and other white cheeses and eggs and wrapped with strips of buttered filo dough. They have been quickly frozen. When ready to serve, bake and present warm. A hors d’oeuvre, tray of eight, $5.
Flogeres: New, a nut roll made with walnuts, wrapped in filo then dipped in honey syrup with a chocolate garnish. $1.25 each.
Gift Box: A box of assorted pastries, packaged in a holiday box suitable for a gift. It will contain four Baklava, two Kourambiedes, one Finikia, one Kataifi and four Flogeres. Each box, $15.
Order can be picked up between 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, at the Greek Orthodox Church, 155 Hogan Road.
