KEENE, N.H. (AP) – The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services has recalled 3,400 doses of a children’s flu vaccine because they were frozen before they were distributed.

As a result, Cheshire Medical Center/Dartmouth-Hitchcock Keene has canceled a flu-shot clinic scheduled for today. Children age 4 and older will have to wait for a new supply, said Thomas K. Link, administrative director of marketing, planning and community relations.

The state health departments action is spurred by last Friday’s recall by Novartis Vaccines and Diagnostics Limited, a production company based in the United Kingdom.

Earlier this month, Novartis shipped about 500,000 vaccines to Cardinal Health Inc., a nationwide vaccine distributor. About 18,000 of those doses were frozen at Cardinal Health before they were distributed.

Health officials say the freezing poses no health risks, but does render the vaccine ineffective.
