PORTLAND – George C. Verenis, 89, of Norway, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Oct. 22.
He was born in Portland, on Jan. 12, 1917, the son of Constantino and Helen Yamakakis Verenis. He graduated from Norway High School in 1935.
He served as a medical non-commissioned officer in the U.S. Army during World War II, after having received his training at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C. After his discharge from the Army, he returned to Norway to take over the family business, Verenis Grocery Store and Deli.
He is survived by his wife, Mary of Norway; a son, Parnie of Columbia, Md.; a daughter, Barbi of Sausalito, Calif.; and a sister, Marian McMorran of Lewiston.
