The California-based Animal Protection Institute has filed a lawsuit that seeks to end trapping that could, and has, trapped species which are protected under the Endangered Species Act. The group is suing on behalf of the group’s members in Maine.

A representative of the Maine Trappers Association said trapping poses no threat to lynx or eagle populations in Maine. However, the barbaric steel leg-hold traps have not only slowly tortured, maimed and killed endangered species, but many other wild and domestic animals as well.

A trappers’ spokesman said “these animal-rights groups don’t have a clue what’s going on in Maine.” Not only does the California-based group have a clue, but countless other Mainers like me do, as well.

Nobody with a conscience should use or allow such an inhumane device in Maine or elsewhere. Some states outlaw them. Maine should do likewise.
