LIVERMORE – Town Administrative Assistant Kurt Schaub said consolidating 911 dispatching services in Androscoggin County into one center is a sensible plan financially.
“The state wants to consolidate the number of centers from three to one,” he advised selectpersons at their meeting last Thursday. “Right now, when you make a 911 call from Livermore, it goes to Auburn, and then it’s forwarded to Livermore Falls,” he said.
Schaub and Berry attended a briefing recently on having one 911 dispatch center, not three. Schaub said the consensus from those attending the briefing was that consolidation makes financial sense.
Lisbon Police Department takes 911 calls and dispatches for police officers and the Fire Department. Lewiston and Auburn’s 911 communications center in the basement of Auburn Central Fire Station and dispatches for Auburn and Lewiston police, fire and ambulances. The Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department takes 911 calls for the rest of the county and dispatches for the sheriff’s department, the Mechanic Falls and Sabattus police departments, and the Poland, Minot, Turner and Greene fire departments.
“The county Sheriff’s Department says their equipment is getting up there in age, and in a couple more years, will need to be upgraded. The estimated cost is a half million dollars,” Berry told fellow board members.
In other business Thursday, historian Dennis Stires said Ethelyn Nichols, 98, is believed to be the oldest resident of the town and therefore entitled to receive the Boston Post Cane.
She was born May 14, 1908, in Jackman.
Stires said if anyone knows of someone older in town, please contact the town office.
He said Nichols said she is willing to accept the cane, and “will use it if anyone gives her a hard time.”
The board discussed purchasing winter sand but made no decision on a supplier.
“We’ve got to do something, and do it fast,” Chairwoman Grace Jacques said.
