ROCKLAND (AP) – A judge set bail at $50,000 on Thursday for a 46-year-old woman who allegedly plotted to help her husband escape from the Maine State Prison, where he is serving a 25-year sentence for murder.

Susan Watland of Jackson made her initial court appearance in Knox County Superior Court, where Justice Donald Marden set bail at $50,000 cash or $200,000 in property. She is charged with aiding an escape and trafficking in prison contraband.

Watland was arrested on Tuesday with a loaded gun as she prepared to enter the state prison in Warren to visit with her husband, Gary Watland. Watland planned to slip a .40-caliber Beretta handgun loaded with 10 rounds of ammunition to her husband so he could take hostages and force prison officials to let him go.

If Watland makes bail, conditions call for her to have no contact with her husband, to stay away from the prison, to have no drugs or alcohol and to be subject to random drug and alcohol tests, said Knox County District Attorney Geoffrey Rushlau.

A Knox County grand jury is expected to review the case when it meets the last week of November.
