Regarding the recent review of “The Fantasticks,” I’d like to make two important points: We all agree there are a few times when the music is a little loud and people may miss a word or two of dialogue. I cannot argue with that, especially since I have experienced the same problem at the Maine Music Theater, as well as Broadway productions.
But rest assured that we take every precaution to lower the probability of that happening by using sound-dampening material under the piano and by mikeing the performers. Still, under certain conditions – like professional theater – it can happen.
The second point I’d like to make is that while the reviewer’s point was well-taken, other than a cursory line about the music, he failed to mention the names and quality of the musicians. Molly Hahns is a virtuoso harpist; someone we were immensely glad and lucky to get. Paul Caron is not only a premier pianist, but a composer, writer and educator. Lastly, Scott Powers is an accomplished musician on many instruments.
Perhaps people have become a bit jaded in this area because the Community Little Theater is the only community theater in Maine capable of presenting so many professional-grade musicians. It is our luck that so many of them chose to live and work near the Lewiston-Auburn area.
