LIVERMORE FALLS – In what police are describing as a gang-related incident, two men accused of threatening a teenager with a knife and a bat during the Jay-Livermore Falls football game Friday night were arrested after officers broke up a scuffle.
Guner Vicelich, 18, and Robert Kostopoulos, 21, both of Jay, were arrested and each charged on a felony charge of criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon and misdemeanor counts of carrying a concealed weapon and refusing to submit to arrest, Livermore Falls police officer Steve Gould said Saturday.
In addition, Vicelich was also charged with possession of alcohol by a minor and violations of condition of release, he said.
Police had received a complaint from a parent that two men armed with a knife and bat were threatening a 15-year-old Livermore Falls boy at the far end of Griffin Field, Gould said.
He and officers Robert Samson and Joe and Adam Sage, brothers, walked to the end of the field and confronted a man having a shoving match with a couple of others, Gould said.
When officers approached Vicelich, who was accused of having the knife, he failed to cooperate with them, police said.
It became obvious that Vicelich had things under his sleeves, so police took him to the ground, Gould said.
He still would not cooperate and was kicking and swearing and had to be carried by police from the sidelines of the field to a police cruiser, Gould said.
Police discovered a knife, a rock and alcohol on him, the officer said.
Officers then went to look for the man with the bat, Gould said.
The Sage brothers located a subject who matched the description and began to interview him, he said.
Kostopoulos was intoxicated and had the bat hidden in his clothing, Gould said.
The Sages attempted to arrest Kostopoulas, but he resisted and was taken to the ground and placed in custody, Gould said.
Officer Tony Duval was called in to take Vicelich and Kostopoulos to the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn, Gould said.
“It was a gang-related crime,” officer Steve Gould said.
His brother, Livermore Falls police Lt. Thomas Gould, said police are investigating the connection.
“One of the weapons had gang designs on it,” the lieutenant said. “The bat had taggings of one of the local gangs.”
Lt. Gould said that there have been three small-town gangs in the area for about three years that have been active sporadically.
“The small-town gangs apparently are starting to get more violent,” Lt. Gould said.
