This letter is in response to Michael Milbury’s letter printed Oct. 20. Once again, his lack of decency toward victims is appalling. Rehabilation is not always an option, and in some cases a failure. I agree the laws against sex offenders should be two strikes, but I also believe the sex offender list is there to protect people. Of course, not all victims are children, and not all crimes are the same degree; the list can help determine that.

In most cases, those who need to can find out the victim’s age and the severity of the crime commited against them. Without that information, we will remain ignorant of the facts.

Maybe the men on the list who were shot didn’t deserve to die, but I am sure their victims didn’t deserve to be abused, either. Just because one person decided to end two men’s lives doesn’t mean the list is always abused in that manner.

His response, “Victims won’t be trusted or do well in society,” as being simply myth is also misinformed. Being a victim myself, I know. Every day from the moment the abuse happens is a struggle, not only to adjust to society, but to trust anyone.

I also disagree with Milbury’s statement that the list violates the Eighth Amendment as cruel or unusual punishment. To me, that would be castration or finger amputation. Then the list wouldn’t be needed.
