AUBURN – Arzelia “Cecile” Metayer, formerly of 146 Bennett Ave. and Chapman House in Auburn, passed away peacefully at Clover Health Care Facility on Saturday, Oct. 28, with family members at her side.
She was born in Lewiston on Nov. 8, 1911, daughter of Alfred and Delina Descormier Courchesne.
She was married to Roland Metayer Sr., who predeceased her in 1978.
She was educated in Lewiston and lived in the Twin Cities all her life. She had worked at Pineland Hospital and at Clark Shoe for many years as an inspector. Her life was dedicated to her family, a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, cherishing any time spent with “mon monde” (her people).
She was a former member of the Sacred Heart Senior Citizen Club and enjoyed many years participating in their activities and taking trips with her friends. Her special interests were knitting, crocheting, gardening, playing Solitaire, reading the daily paper, people watching, especially children, and taking numerous trips to Canada to visit her sister, Eva, and her cousins.
She had a most unique sense of humor, which she never lost. In French or English, you could count on her to find a humorous side of any situation. A special, longtime friend to many, she had a way of always being a lady with a smile and a pleasant disposition.
She is survived by her sons, Ralph Metayer and his wife, Lorraine Ayotte Metayer, of Rumford, and Roland A. Metayer Jr. and his companion, Claire Breton, of Lewiston; her grandson, Dr. Michael Metayer, O.D. and his wife, Dr. Roxanne Parker Metayer, O.D., of Windham; her granddaughter, Kelly Metayer Nadeau and her husband, William (Bill) Nadeau, of Lewiston; great-grandsons, Christopher Nadeau and his fiancée, Jennifer Paine, William (BJ) Nadeau, and Keith and Luke Metayer; her sister, Eva Courchesne, and nephews, Camille and Pierre Therrien, of Montreal, Canada; a special niece, Jeanne Rivard Pitman of Minot; a sister-in-law, Wilma Courchesne Gustafsen and her husband, John of Staten Island, N.Y.; grand-nieces and nephews, great-grandnieces and nephews, and many cousins in Canada, as well as in the states.
She was predeceased by her husband; her parents; and a brother, Hector Courchesne of Staten Island, N.Y.
She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
