NORTH FRYEBURG – Elbert “Nick” Waterman of North Fryeburg died at home on Oct. 25.
He was born in New Gloucester in 1930, the son of Herbert and Thirza (McConkey) Waterman. He was brought up on a dairy farm and graduated from New Gloucester High School in 1948 as valedictorian of his class. He served in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict.
He worked for 10 years at Oliver Stores. Then worked in the woods up until 1980, when he was forced into early retirement due to a physical condition. Nick enjoyed baseball and softball and played for the Old Auburn Ace’s Semi Pro Team in 1949 to 1950. He was a coach for Little League and Pony League baseball in Lovell and Fryeburg for 17 years. He also enjoyed being a part of the bowling leagues for many years.
As an avid hunter and fisherman he was a member of the Sportsman Alliance of Maine, The National Rifle Association, lifetime member of Amvets (Post 6) of New Gloucester and was a very active lifetime member of the VFW (Post 6783) of Fryeburg/Lovell.
In 1953, he married Olive Mae Gibbs of Norwich, England. They had three sons and one daughter, Carl and Missy Waterman of Enfield, N.H., Paul and Ellie Waterman of Lovell, Rodney Waterman and Becky Liddy of West Fryeburg and Candy Sue and Wayne Jones of Madison, N.H.; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brothers Walter, Robert and Willard Waterman; and two sisters, Estella and Catherine.
He was predeceased by a brother, Donald.
