SHIRLEY MILLS – Samuel N. Luce, 70, of Oak Ridge Road, died Friday, Oct. 27.
He was born in Winthrop, on Dec. 15, 1935, the son on Evora (House) Prout and Leroy Luce. He attended school in Winthrop and on March 10, 1953, he entered the U.S. Navy and served in the Korean War aboard the USS Iowa.
After completing his service, he returned to Winthrop, where he became a boilerman for the Commonwealth Shoe Co. He then began a career in construction, working for various companies such as Frank Rossi, Blue Rock Industries and Shaw Brothers Construction, where he was a heavy equipment operator for many years. Sam made many friends during his career at Shaw Brothers before retiring in 2000. Just prior to his retirement, he built a retirement home in Shirley Mills, where he obtained several more very close friends.
He was known for his love of the outdoors and his enjoyment of hunting and fishing. However, his greatest love was spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by two sons, Stephen Luce, and his fiancée, Jolene, of Poland Spring and Gary Towle of Canada; two daughters, Sheriann Camp, and her husband, Richard and Karen Koster, both of Wisconsin; a sister, Donalda (Luce) Chase, and her husband, Don, of Winthrop; a brother, Robert Prout, and his life partner, Karen, of Manchester; and several grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his parents; and son, Jeffrey.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice as well as Wayne and Penny Burgess for their love and care during Sam’s final days.
