SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (AP) – A sulfuric acid leak that forced about 80 households to evacuate has been cleaned up, and residents have been allowed to return to their homes.

The evacuation was ordered Monday night after an acid spill at Presstek Inc., a metal plating business. The cause remains under investigation.

Hazardous material teams cleaned up about 1,500 gallons of the acid Wednesday, and South Hadley and Granby residents who live nearby the plant were allowed to go home at 9 p.m.

South Hadley’s public schools also reopened Wednesday. Schools were closed Tuesday because officials feared that buses parked near Presstek may have been contaminated.

Officials from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said the vehicles are not contaminated.
