ELLSWORTH (AP) – A woman accused of killing an elderly woman on Mount Desert Island has had bail set at $250,000 cash or $500,000 in property.

Justice E. Allen Hunter set bail for Michelle Mills, 37, during a brief hearing Tuesday in Hancock County Superior Court.

Mills, who is in the Penobscot County Jail, has been in jail for four months since her arrest in the slaying of 83-year-old Jacqueline Evans.

Mills’ attorney, Jeffrey Silverstein, said he was pleased that bail was set.

“For my client, this gives her the opportunity to hopefully make bail,” he said.

Mills has pleaded not guilty in last January’s death of Evans, who was found severely injured in her oceanfront cottage and died two days later at Eastern Maine Medical Center.
