I was very disappointed with the rationale for why the Sun Journal endorsed the Taxpayer Bill of Rights. The editorial (Oct. 29) clearly names the shortcomings and problems with TABOR. The only reason given for supporting it is to send a message to Augusta.
I do woodworking. If my jigsaw has a broken blade, I don’t decide to just ram it through the wood and hope the blade will somehow work anyway. That would damage the wood and put me at risk of injury. Instead, I wait until I can replace the blade.
The editorial board acknowledges TABOR is a defective tool and can only offer a wish that it might get fixed once enacted. Passing bad legislation to correct a problem will only create new problems.
We are not voting on what we might wish TABOR to say. We are not voting on TABOR to “send a message” to Augusta. We are voting on a referendum that will greatly impact our towns, schools, cities and state. We have to vote on TABOR as it is written now, and as it is written, it is a defective tool for all the reasons stated in the editorial.
Nothing prevents people from correcting TABOR’s flaws and bringing it back in a form that is not so likely to create damage.
