Kudos to the Sun Journal for its common sense analysis of the Taxpayer Bill of Rights.

I agree that TABOR is imperfect, but I cannot understand why every other state is able to function without digging its hands so deeply into its citizen’s pockets. Tax relief has been on the ballot before, and the only thing taxpaying citizens of this state have to show for it is broken promises from our politicians. It is clear our politicians are aware of the value of tax relief as a compaign issue when they want our votes. It is also clear that once elections are over they are unable or unwilling to follow through on their promises and there appears to be no indication they ever will.

TABOR is imperfect but it’s better than allowing the current situation to persist.

TABOR may well have to be modified in the future but it remains the best starting point we have. Opponents of TABOR who point to Colorado should note that that state has modified TABOR but not repealed it. TABOR will send a clear message to our politicians that Maine citizens are serious about tax reform this time.

If TABOR fails the message to our politicians will be clear: Maine citizens don’t like the current tax situation but aren’t dissatisfied enough to do anything about it. Our governor, senators and representatives will take this as a green light to continue with business as usual and it is unlikely things will ever change.
