The Sun Journal, my paper even here in little West Paris, has been a paper to admire in recent years. Its fair approach to the new Somali community in Lewiston comes to mind.
However, I am not pleased with the paper’s endorsement of the Taxpayer Bill of Rights. I agree with much of the editorial printed in the Oct. 29 edition. The Legislature has been unresponsive to people’s difficulty with high taxes. It is frustrating to be told repeatedly that a plan is on its way. Consolidation of services needs to be considered seriously. That is, if it doesn’t mean that small towns must give up their elementary schools and thus their identity as a community.
TABOR will not punish lawmakers. In fact, it will only punish the very people it claims to help. For example, the same people who have difficulty paying their taxes are often people who struggle with health care or need public support for an adequate education.
