I am disappointed by the Sun Journal editorial staff allowing itself to be swayed by negative politics and using the story about liens on Chandler Woodcock’s property as an excuse not to endorse his candidacy for governor. I would have rather that the board endorse another candidate for what they find right with that person, than choosing not endorse a candidate because of private matters that really should be no one else’s business.

Members of the editorial board say they can’t support Chandler Woodcock’s wishes to bring our fiscal house in order when he has struggled to put his own house in order. Like a lot of Mainers, he at times has struggled, but he still managed to bring his house in order and pay off his debts. And he did it while putting four kids through college and taking care of an elderly relative. If anything, the fact that he faced these personal challenges and persevered through and overcame them makes me admire him even more.

Using personal affairs such as this as the basis of deciding who to or who not to endorse opens up a whole new can of worms. Now anyone’s personal finances are up for discussion as a campaign issue. Is this what we want future elections to be about?
