Buckfield – A man was badly burned around 1:30 p.m Sunday after paint fumes ignited in his home.

William Kimball, of 168 Bear Pond Road, suffered burns to his face and the front of his body while spray painting a room in his home, according to State Fire Marshal Sgt. Joel Davis.

Kimball’s home sustained only minor fire damage.

“Something, possibly a light, caused fumes from the paint to explode,” explained Davis. He couldn’t say what, exactly, ignited the paint fumes pending additional investigation.

Kimball was air-lifted to Maine Medical Center in Portland. He was listed in fair condition there Sunday night.

Kimball was home alone at the time of the fire and, according to Davis, was able to get himself to a nearby store to seek help.

The Oxford County Sheriff’s Department received an initial 911 call from an unidentified man who had taken Kimball to the Buckfield fire and rescue barn at 40 Turner St.

Buckfield fire and rescue personnel tended to Kimball and made arrangements for a LifeFlight helicopter ambulance to pick him up at a the high school football field, Davis said.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office was handling the investigation Sunday night. Investigators planned to talk with the victim as soon as possible in order to pinpoint the cause of the flames, Davis said.
