1. I can’t sit idly by and let our leaders continue to tax and spend Maine residents the way they have for 30-some years. Maine is one of two states (Louisiana, the other) to have an economic decline last year. We have become the No. 1 highest taxed state in the country. I promise not to raise your taxes (and fees) in order to balance the state budget.
2. My top priority will be to “not” raise taxes. We need to live within our means. The best way to lower taxes is to reduce spending and this can be achieved by requiring a two-thirds majority vote to raise taxes and fees, reducing income taxes, controlling property taxes by eliminated unfunded mandates, and improving our overall business climate in Maine.
3. I support TABOR. It will make government more accountable to the taxpayers. It puts individual people more in control of their tax dollars, not special interest groups.
4. I believe health care, taxes, jobs and the economy play a much larger role this election cycle.
5. Dirigo Health is a failure. We have spent over $53 million. Gov. Baldacci had hoped to have the 44,300 previously uninsured Mainers enrolled by the summer of 2006. Only about 2,500 enrollees were previously without coverage, putting the governor’s program at 95 percent under-projection. That’s a 5 percent success rate. Dirigo Health is truly a failure.
