LEWISTON – Winnifred L. Cyr, 92, passed away peacefully on Nov. 4, at a Lewiston health care facility.

She was born in Van Buren on Nov. 2, 1914, the daughter of Hypolite and Julie (Dumond) LeBlanc.

For eighteen years, she was employed as a cook for the Van Buren Community Hospital, retiring at the age of 68.

She was a member of the Evangeline Circle, Daughters of Isabella in Van Buren and the Red Hat Society in Lewiston.

She loved life, family, and her friends.

She enjoyed music, dancing, and getting together with her friends to do various activities.

She was very resourceful, making a good life for a large family with limited resources.

She was a strong willed and loving woman which was abundantly clear by the overwhelming love she gave and received from the staff at D’Youville Nursing Home.

Everyone she met was touched by her, especially her very close friend and roommate, Cecile Cote, which she often referred to as her sister.

Cecile and her were inseparable, and were often called the “Golden Girls.” Where one was, the other was not far behind.

When Winnie got sick, Cecile never left her side and she was there holding her hand when she took her last breath. No one could ever ask for a better friend.

The family thanks everyone who loved her and took such good care of her.

No one will ever be able to fill the void she created in the hearts of her family, friends, and caregivers.

She was the wife of the late Leo James Cyr, who passed away in 1974.

She is survived by two sons, James Cyr of Denver, Colo., and Elmer Cyr of Lisbon Falls; seven daughters, Leola Mauri of Gahanna, Ohio, Carline Martin of Fort Kent, Thelma De’Phillipo and her husband, Dick, of Portland, Loraine Fennessy and her husband, James, of Lewiston, Sandra Cyr and her husband, Martin, of Augusta, Joan Welch and her husband, David of Wilbraham, Mass., Donna Dionne and her companion, John Strong of Kittery; three sisters, Rita Cyr of Van Buren, Pauline Desjardins of Gorham, and Gladys Kucipeck of Tupperlake, N.Y.; 37 grandchildren; many many great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by four sons, Philip, Donald, David, and Daniel; one daughter, Carrie L’Heureux; three brothers, Louis, Arness, and Willie; and three sisters, Flora Parent, Dorilda Ouellette, and Florence Michaud.
