OES program
MECHANIC FALLS – Dwinal Chapter 28, Order of the Eastern Star, will meet at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8, at the Masonic Hall, 474 South Main St. The chapter will celebrate the upcoming holiday with a Thanksgiving program. The meeting will be preceded by a 6:30 p.m. supper. All members of the order are invited.

BOWDOIN – Regent Sheila Desgrosseilliers announces that the Burnt Meadow Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, will meet at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 11, at the home of Joanne Coombs. Following the business meeting, Corley Anne Byras will present a program on Burma Shave signs.
Veterans’ ceremony
LEWISTON – The annual Veterans Day ceremony will start at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 11, at the Lewiston Armory, sponsored by the L & A Veterans Council.
The program will open with the National Anthem by Lewiston High School chorus with the U.S. Naval Honor Guard from Brunswick and invocation by Jerry DerBoghosian, chaplain of the VFW and Franco Vets.
A Pass in Review will be held by the military, veterans, fraternal and youth color guards and members in honor of veterans.
Dignitaries will be recognized and the Lewiston and Edward Little high school bands and Lewiston High School chorus will perform, as will the Just Us Entertainers.
A USO dance will be held at 8 that evening at the Lewiston Elks Lodge with music from the 1940s to the 1960. For more information, call organizer Bert Dutil at 786-2305.
Martel meeting
LEWISTON – Chapter Martel, Association Canado-Americaine, will meet at 1:15 p.m. Monday, Nov. 13, at the Frye School Apartments Hall, 140 Ash St., rear entrance.
An optional noon meal will be offered to participating members at Lewiston Mandarin Restaurant, 750 Sabattus St., prior to the meeting. This is the annual collection of canned food for the needy. All members are invited.
OES landmarks
WALES – Lakeside Chapter 60, OES, will meet at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, at the Grange/Masonic Building on Centre Road.
Members will celebrate “Giving Thanks” and renew their obligation. The landmarks of the order will be read. The general information folder of the Grand Chapter Charity Fund will also be read.
All members of the order are welcome. Refreshments will be served after the meeting.
Health program
LEWISTON – Anne-Marie Mullins of St. Mary’s EAP will present a free program on singles and combating the holiday blues at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, at the Resident Dining Room at the St. Marguerite d’Youville Pavilion. Call 753-5467 to register. Registration deadline is Monday, Nov. 13.
Library event

Open house
MECHANIC FALLS – Tyrian Masonic Lodge 73 will hold a harvest supper and open house at the lodge, South Main Street, on Saturday, Nov. 18. The evening will begin with a social hour, followed by dinner at 5:30 p.m. and the program at 6:30. Cost is a $5 donation.
During the open house, the public can learn about Freemasonry, its past, present and future. They can learn how to join and what benefits are offered as a member of the fraternity. A question-and-answer session will follow.

School exams
AUBURN – St. Dominic Regional High School will hold the first two opportunities to sit for the placement exam on Saturdays, Nov. 18 and Dec. 2.
All ninth-grade applicants must sit for the placement exam on one of the testing dates that are offered during the school year.
The test results help St. Dom’s to assess individual academic needs and place students where they can achieve success.
The exams are held from 8 to 10:30 a.m. The fee is $15, due upon the day of the exam. Doors will open at 7:30 a.m. For more information, contact the admissions office at 782-6911, ext. 2110, or [email protected]. St. Dominic is a coeducational Catholic high school.
Giving Tree
BOWDOIN – The Bowdoin Community Giving Tree project is accepting names for holiday gift-giving needs. The annual program was created to assist families by providing gifts for children of Bowdoin for Christmas.
To have a children’s names included on this year’s list or if anyone knows of a family in need of assistance, contact Karen Mayo at 666-3375. All information submitted is confidential. All names must be received by Nov. 17. If a person or an organization would like to make a donation, contact Mayo at the number above.

AUBURN – The First Universalist Church, Unitarian Universalist, of Auburn is having its annual Gingerbread Fair from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18. There are a few spots left for crafters. Anyone interested should call Mary Lou Hofmann at 777-1833.
