Lewiston senior honored by mayor

LEWISTON – As Mayor Lionel C. Guay Jr. and members of the Lewiston Youth Advisory Council approached senior Jared Turcotte in the Lewiston High School Library on Oct. 17, a look of confusion came over his face.

With a puzzled look, he glanced at the accompanying principal and assistant principals. As Guay began to speak about the October Mayoral Citation of Excellence, a broad smile quickly crossed his face.

Guay said, “Jared, you are commended for your focus and success in regard to your grades and athletic performance. Annually obtaining excellent grades while at Lewiston High School and recently being named the Top Player in the State of Maine by Sports Illustrated are remarkable accomplishments. You are congratulated for setting personal goals and diligently working toward them.”

Each month, the citation is given to a Lewiston middle school or high school student, and nominations for the November citation are due no later than Thursday, Nov. 9. A one-page nomination must concern an achievement or accomplishment deemed as “above and beyond” or “extraordinary” that has occurred in the last two months.

Nominations may be submitted to Guay at 27 Pine St., Lewiston, ME 04240, or via dottie@ci.lewiston.me.us. After reviewing nominations, Guay and the youth council will decide upon a recipient, and the presentation will be made later in November at the youth’s respective school.
