Auburn – Police confirmed Monday night that a third person at the scene of a Sunday afternoon shooting on Pownal road was indeed a woman – the wife of the man who was shot.

Pauline Lessard of Lewiston was not directly involved with the shooting, but she was present at the home when the altercation occurred, said police Lt. Jason Moen. Pauline Lessard is the wife of Richard Lessard, the man who was shot in driveway of the home.

The couple were in the midst of divorcing prior to the shooting, Moen said.

“We are now investigating this as having a possible domestic violence angle,” Moen said. He declined to elaborate on the motive for the shooting.

Lessard was shot in the leg by Matthew Hearn, the homeowner at 738 Pownal Road, after Lessard showed up at Hearn’s home unexpectedly and a fight between the two men took place, Moen said.

Lessard was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, where he remained in stable condition Monday night.

Police have yet to file any charges in the case.

“We know who was involved and where to find them,” Moen said.
