MACHIAS (AP) – University of Maine System Chancellor Terrence MacTaggart said Monday he is reallocating $2.7 million from the system’s central budget to the various campuses, a shift designed to protect academic quality and maintain affordability.

MacTaggart, who announced the decision during a weekend meeting of the system’s Board of Trustees in Machias, said the administrative cost-cutting and reallocations will reduce system-level support services.

“Like virtually all state-supported entities, the University of Maine System has been struggling to maintain affordable, high quality programs and services in a time of growing demands and declining resources,” MacTaggart said.

“This has been an ongoing challenge.”

The system also announced at the meeting that fall enrollment exceeds 34,000 students for the fifth year in a row.
