PORTLAND (AP) – Democratic Reps. Tom Allen and Michael Michaud won re-election Tuesday as Maine’s congressional incumbents scored a clean sweep over underfunded opponents.
Sen. Olympia Snowe also was re-elected. She has now been undefeated in three Senate races, eight congressional bids and three runs for the Maine Legislature.
In the 2nd Congressional District, Michaud defeated Republican Scott D’Amboise, an eye technician and small business owner. With 34 percent of precincts reporting, Michaud had 71 percent to 29 percent for D’Amboise in unofficial returns.
Michaud’s district includes Northern Maine as well as central parts of the state, including Oxford, Franklin and Androscoggin counties.
In the 1st District, Allen turned back challenges by Republican Darlene Curley, author of Tina’s Law in the Maine Legislature, and independent Dexter Kamilewicz, who promised to bring troops home from Iraq in the southern congressional district.
With 36 percent of precincts reporting, Allen had 62 percent to 28 percent for Curley and 10 percent for Kamilewicz in unofficial returns.
All three incumbents had large fundraising advantages and the challengers’ parties reserved spending for more competitive races elsewhere.
