On the 25th of Sept., the freshmen class went on their annual MOBY (My own Back Yard) trip. They returned on the 29th , four nights and five days later. “The bus rides were loud but the only long ones were from Monmouth to Acadia and back,” said one student. The group stayed at Seawall Campground during their nights, getting to know the joys of camping with their friends. For some it was not a real joy.
The first activity the students had was exploring the many wonders of Fort Knox and learning about its history. After, the students hiked the South Bubble, where a few realized just how out of shape they were. Before the first day was called to an end and everyone got to crawl into bed, a class on astronomy took place at a rocky beach. In the morning a hike on Gorham Mountain was taken. Then everyone was able to relax on the whale watch. They saw many whales. “I liked the whale watch best because I didn’t get seasick and it was fun,” one of the students claimed. Unfortunately, for others the seasickness didn’t pass them over.
Wed, morning was spent at Wonderland where everyone did beach profiling. Then back at camp presentations were made. The only break from work was lunch and a swimming expedition at Echo Lake for an hour. The students presented their hard work after supper, doing wonderful jobs. Thurs. the group was split in two. The first went to the Ship Harbor, then having an art class by the water, while the second group hiked Flying Mountain. They switched locations after an hour and a half. After lunch, the students labored away at community service. They cleared away weeds on the carriage roads, covering over a mile. To relax after all the work, a trip to Sand Beach was taken. Than that night a fire was built, with skits and scary stories to entertain everyone, since it was the last night at Seawall Campground.
The last day the buses drove up Cadillac Mountain. It was foggy and little could be seen. A quick shopping trip in the gift store for those who wanted was taken, but then it was time to head for home. It was a fun experience, though many say they like it more now than when the trip was actually taking place.
