Richard Fochtmann’s letter (Nov. 2) states that he is a veteran, but he omitted whether his tour of duty included any combat. As a Vietnam veteran, I can assure him that not one person in that, or any war in which America was involved, ever died “in vain.”

The families, friends and neighbors of all those who have placed themselves in harm’s way must never consider that supporting our troops could ever be considered “sick,” as Fochtmann states.

I chose to fight for my country when I was called to service for many personal reasons, such as having had the freedom to choose what religious beliefs to embrace, what institutions of learning to attend, and the ability to speak freely and openly about any subject without fear of reprisals. I owed all who had served before me, having learned early in life that freedom is never “free.” I fought for my family, my country, my God and for myself.

If Fochtmann is so unhappy with our current system of government, I am sure there are many like-minded people who would embrace his ideals and welcome him with open arms. I do not agree with his views or opinions, but I fought so he could express them freely.

God bless all of our troops. I thank them for their sacrifices, and pray for their swift and safe return home.
