PORTLAND, Maine (AP) – Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe turned back challenges by Democrat Jean Hay Bright and independent Bill Slavick on Tuesday to win a third term and extend her streak to 14 election victories.

Snowe, a self-described moderate whose independent streak has sometimes rankled her party leadership, has now been undefeated in three Senate races, eight congressional bids and three runs for the Maine Legislature.

Snowe’s win in Maine was based on a statistical analysis of the vote from voter interviews conducted for The Associated Press by Edison Media Research and Mitofsky International.

While Republicans and Democrats fought bruising battles in many states, the outcome of Snowe’s race in a traditional blue state was never in doubt.

Neither of Snowe’s competitors, Hay Bright, an organic farmer and longtime Democratic activist, nor Slavick, a retired university professor and peace activist, was able to gain traction against the well-financed and popular incumbent.
